Zenyatta: The Legendary Racehorse Mare

Zenyatta is a stunning dark bay mare, who was bred in Kentucky. Her sire is Street Cry (2002 UAE Horse of the Year after winning that year's Dubai World Cup). Along with Zenyatta, Street Cry also sired 2007 Kentucky Derby-winner Street Sense, Australian Horse Of The Year Winx, Australian champion Whobegotyou, and 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking. Zenyatta’s dam (mother) is Vertigineux. Vertigineux, a beautiful dark bay daughter of Kris S, was named the 2008 Kentucky Broodmare Of The Year. Zenyatta was sold as a yearling at the 2005 Keeneland September Sale for the price of $60,000 to Jerry and Ann Moss. The somewhat lower price was the effect of a skin disease that broke out a couple days before the sale. Zenyatta was named after the album Zenyatta Mondatta, by The Police, who were signed to A&M Records by Jerry Moss. She was trained by John Shirrefs and ridden by the jockey Mike Smith for 17 of 20 starts. David Flores rode Zenyatta in her first three starts.

Zenyatta is a powerfully built mare, her height between 17 hands (4 inches per hand) and 17.2 hands at the withers. Her enormous, flowing stride was estimated at 26 feet (7.9 m). Around the racetrack, Zenyatta was known as an amiable and inquisitive horse with a "Zen-like calm". This smart girl relaxed herself before races by walking or prancing with an elevated stride, leading to comparisons with dressage horses. "She stretches so much doing all that dancing that she's actually ready to go," said Smith. "You don't have to do a lot with her. She knows that people around her are watching. She knows that she not only has to go out there and compete, but she has the whole package. She's a great entertainer."

Zenyatta, a champion thoroughbred racing mare, was foaled on April 1st, 2004. She developed late, making her first start as a late 3 year old, winning a maiden race on November 22, 2007. This spectacular mare won 19 starts out of 20! Her sole defeat occurred in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic by a neck to Blame. Despite the loss, she was named American Horse Of The Year in 2010. She was also the American Champion Older Female horse in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Zenyatta became the first mare to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic In 2009. She was known for her closing finishes, often spotting early front runners large leads, then overtaking her opponents down the final strides. This gorgeous mare retired from racing in 2010. She is now enjoying life as a mom.

Zenyatta was a legendary racehorse, and is now retired. She has 3 living offspring, Z Princess (her first filly) had to be euthanized due to an unfortunate accident in the paddock. Her birthday was April 20, 2014. Zenyatta has 2 fillies and 2 geldings. Her oldest, Cozmic One, was born on May 8th, 2012. He didn’t hit it off at the racetrack, and is now training in jumping. Cozmic One, affectionately known as Coz, enjoys jumping much more! Ziconic is an April 1st baby, born in the year of 2013. Like his brother, he didn’t do the best in racing. Ziconic is now training as an off-the-track Thoroughbred! Zellda is a 3 year old, her birthday is May 9th. This pretty bay filly is training as a racehorse, she is just like her mom! Zenyatta’s newest filly is an adorable chestnut, with a perfect white circle on her forehead. Much like her mom, this filly loves attention. She was born on May 17, 2020. Zenyatta is a busy girl!
